Maria Callas "La Divina"

The unique Opera singer from Greece

Maria Callas was born in New York in December 1923 from parents which had immigrated from Greece in July 1923.

She always had problems with her mother, and as she confessed in interviews of the time, she would never forgive her for taking away her childhood.

Maria Callas was blessed with a soprano voice of fine range and a gift for dramatic expression, and a strong will for making better, which made her a special artist and the most renowned and influential Opera singer of the 20th century.

But her incredible voice din't last for long.

Callas' husband Meneghini, in the book he wrote, said that Callas suffered an unusually early onset of menopause, which could have affected her voice.

Nevertheless, Maria Callas' interpretations still are memorable, and no other Opera singer has been able, until now, to give such unforgettable performances, and leaving audiences in a state of emotion as Maria Callas La Divina was able to do.

Maria Callas lost a big amount of weight (36 kg) during 1953 and early 1954, with a very radical diet, thus gaining a greater confidence both as a person and a performer.
